Favorites

So far, I cant tell you my favorite hair products besides the ones I am currently testing out but I can tell you some of the other great natural products I am in love with and best of all help me on my journey of being chemical free and eco friendly.

First something that I really never understood its greatness till a few years back, forgot and now have regained my memory. I am talking about Shea Butter, straight from the nut. I love it. I use it as a facial moisturizer in its pure form, I also use it to moisturize the rest of my skin and now I am also using it on my hair as well. As of now I have been using it for about 2 weeks. I just realized it has helped to make my nails grow longer. I mean granted normally my nails grow on their own but they are brittle and always break so they don't get long anymore, well good job shea butter!

Also a new love that I have is vegan soap! I have two favorite brands as of right now, Brand Number One Nubian Heritage http://www.nubianheritage.com/ Raw Shea Butter soap with soy milk. It leaves me with absolutely stunning skin! Second comes from this amazing little shop in my neighborhood of Hampden (go Hampden)SEVI a vegan product store that even sells items for my pups that are vegan! CHEERS!!! http://www.sevicosmetics.com/

Oh and I forgot another Carol's daughter product, her shea butter lip balm, with almond oil, it is purely delish and to die for!

I also have been doing a product by Bath and Body works called True Body so I am currently researching them to see the ingredients and everything else.

Have any skin and hair products you would to share? Drop me a line!

A Beginning

Well I have been reading blog after blog after blog to get advice on how to deal with my hair and really prepare myself for this journey. Hopefully through this blog I can share with you my experiences as well as things that have worked.

I have also been reading up on the differant language that is natural hair and just being natural it general.

To start I wanted to let you know the products I am currently using and how they work for me. To start the hair, I recently purchased Carol's Daughter Hair Milk and Rosemary Mint Sea Moss Shampoo. To start these products seem ok. My hair doesn't really feel any different and so far I don't feel like its getting the moisture it needs from the hair milk. However I am going to try their hair balm to see if that works a little better.

Today, I did a Co-Wash with a generic conditioner and then I used Pantene( had to cheat a little) hair conditioning mask to strengthen my hair. After wards, I let it air dry braided it in sections and wrapped a curler around it. I am going to sleep it through over night to see how it turns out, could be a hot mess but will see :)

I am not my hair

In the words of India Arie, I am not my hair! Lately, I have been putting in much thought about the chemicals that I come in contact. The chemicals, I put in my hair, on my skin and chemicals I use on a daily basis.

When I was younger, I wasn't exposed to all of these chemicals, My parents didn't use them on me, so why use them as an adult. Lately, I have been really reading labels and seeing all of the crazy things that are in shampoos, relaxers, moisturizers, lotions just everything.

I have decided as an African American Women to take my self back to those days of being chemical free including my hair. So no more relaxer. Usually with my hair, I can go at least a month or two sometimes without getting one. So at this point it has been since April 24th since the last time I had a relaxer so almost 2 months. After talking to a friend who has also gone through this process I am prepared to experiment and see my hair in it's natural stance. My mother when I was younger used to press and comb my hair for as long as I can remember. So I don't even remember what it looked like in its natural state, but I am excited to try.

I have been researching a series of blogs, websites and youtube video's for suggestions on the transition period as well as a variety of products to use to take of my hair or like some of the websites say "train" my hair.

Here is a current photo of what it normally looks like. My overall goal is achieve healthy, natural hair with a little bit of length.

Just a quick run down of what I am currently using:
Olive Oil Moisturizer
I have been getting a wet set while I have a lot of relaxer still left in my hair, but I am considering the BC ( the Big Chop) in the up and coming weeks, once a little more relaxer grows out.
As of right now no heat touches my hair, I get a wet set and then nothing for weeks at a time but I am reading up on other styles.
I am also going to try Carol's Daughter products to see if my hair takes to it.

The beginning of a new adventure

Today is the day I have decided to start my journey, a journey in which I call Transitions of Self;Love and be loved!I decided to start this journey after many events have transpired in my life within the past year. Events that I could have changed and some I could not have changed.

This is my last year before I turn the big "30" so I feel and know there are some things that need to change thus the title transitions of self. Many of these things are bigger then me, things that emcompass my surroundings, my nature and my beings.

I am excited to start this journey and excited to share it with you. I am hoping to learn a lot along the way and hoping you will learn a little bit as well. I am hoping to provide some insight to some things for folks and provide an experience like no other.

So cheers and on to a beautiful journey!
